I was also surprised that Garmin didn't have a built-in watch face that displayed HR. I was used to this coming over from FitBit. Bought a second hand fenix 3 about 3 months ago. It was a great deal (125 usd). It is my first fitness watch. Great battery life, good activity tracking, decent smart phone connectivity (notifications, weather forecast etc). I really like it to the extent that I don't remove it at all.
Bad news - so far, it seems to really chew threw battery life. I’ve done numerous 3+ hour events (running / biking) and only had my Fenix 5 Plus lose 5% or so of its battery charge during the event. I usually only need to charge the watch maybe once a week, if that. I’ve now done two runs with the Fenix 5 Plus using Spotify.
Screen, comfort and battery life. As we've mentioned, the screen is one of the main upgrades over the Fenix 2, and the 3.1cm (1.2-inch) 218 pixel-diameter display uses a color system Garmin calls Chroma. It's backlit and is easy to read in sunlight, assuming it's actively tracking something like a hike or a run.
Our Verdict. The Garmin Fenix 5x Plus Sapphire is the Rolls Royce of altimeter watches. It, of course, has an altimeter, barometer, and compass tech, along with a slew of other GPS, fitness tracking, and lifestyle features. It has some of the best display quality in this review, and its full-color screen makes it engaging and easy-to-read.
Garmin says in normal GPS mode, the basic Fenix 7 watches have up to 37 hours of battery life, and this is extended to 46 hours with solar, which is far longer than that on most of the best GPS
